Studying composition can be related to studying somebody else's culture and language. It is a journey that both teacher and students explore together.

Clarinet

The clarinet is a beautiful instrument.  It produces a sound by a single reed vibrating against the instrument. Whether you are a big person or a small person it's never too late or early to start playing.

Saxophone

Big loud and beautiful, jazzy and classical. The saxophone is great for anyone who loves making a big sound. Its made mostly from brass but like clarinet, it produces a sound by vibrating the reed.  We offer lessons on both alto  and  tenor saxes which then allows you to transition to either soprano or baritone once  you have built up your skills

Teacher Beliefs

Music Unlocks Your Brain

There is now an undeniable body of research proving the academic, psychological and social benefits of playing an instrument. As such music should be viewed as an imperative key to unlocking the hidden potential of every individual. From dementia suffers to the intellectually and physically disabled to those with learning disabilities and poor mental health music brings joy, satisfaction, accomplishment and increased brain activity, fine motor dexterity and relational improvements.

I see students as people and music as a vessel allowing us to explore and discover our individuality, connection to others and the various complications of life.

Inclusive Music Education All Ages and Abilities

I am a passionate advocate for inclusive music education. But unfortunately, the current structure of our society and education system do not support this ideology. Possible the biggest roadblock to music education is money and to a lesser extent time. Despite all the research demonstrating the potentially life changing benefits of learning an instrument, it is still an area that seriously struggles to maintain even minimal levels of funding. Music education is expensive. It is not conducive to mass education and instruments alone can be costly.

I do not have any solutions to these dilemmas. But I will always be doing what I can to serve those who life has disadvantaged with music. If you have any suggestions or wish to sponsor a child's music lessons then please do not hesitate to reach out and get in touch.

Teaching More Than Music

Teaching more than music encapsulates the idea of educational multitasking. It allows music to serve as a catalyst for personal development, enrichment and fulfillment. We can use music to work on developing our character particularly in areas of perseverance, self-confidence and self-discipline. Music also offers a safe place for individuals to develop life skills including organisation, prioritizing, goal setting and time manage.

Today many people struggle to connect with both themselves and others. Individuals often feel isolated and sometimes don't even know where to begin. Music has this incredible ability to enable us to connect to other peoples emotions and express our own. It is an abstract yet powerful form of communication that can permit us to express things we would be unable to say with words. This connection many times can function like a bridge between two or more people fostering relationships and true connection.

Music is of course also about enjoyment and can help teach people how to enjoy life again regardless of what might otherwise be happening.

Ultimately teaching more than music aims to empower people to experience a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Teacher Bio

The Techie FlutistHi,
I'm Emma (a.k.a.) The Techie Flutist and I'm super excited that you're interested in pursuing music lessons. Music has been a part of my life for pretty much as long as I can remember. But surprisingly neither of my parents played an instrument. At times my Dad dabbled in piano but these events were sporadic and rare. I was devastated when he decided to give his piano way. (I think I was around 10 years old). I'm not from a healthy family but was fortunate enough to attend a primary school that valued music. The music teacher was of the opinion that everyone who wants to should be able to learn a musical instrument regardless of their parent's financial situation. Consequently, I got to start learning flute in grade 5.

I chose flute for several reasons. Firstly, nearly everyone at the school played the violin and I wanted to play something that was different. And secondly, because I had a memory of an ordinary everyday shopping trip that my mother took me on when I was a little girl. However, on this particular trip, there was a busker playing the flute. To me, it looked and sounded like the most beautiful thing in the world. She was playing at the bottom of an arcade and her sound echoed up the walkway like it would have if we were in a cathedral. I guess another reason why I chose flute was that piano wasn't an option (as we no longer had one) and cello was not an option because the school wasn't offering it.

Leaving this musically rich schooling environment at the end of year 7 was a challenge. My new school didn't seem to know what classical music was and my parents had kept me totally 'sheltered' from the 'evil' pop music.

In year 8 my mind exploded with musical possibility. Pop/rock music was to my ears completely foreign yet totally incredible. My parent's house was full of classical, opera and really old Jaz and yet here was music that was in plain English and you could sing along to it.

I loved singing but singing when you are painfully shy can be a challenge. Although now as an adult I have finally taken up singing lessons.

In year 8 I started teaching myself guitar and played flute in a community orchestra. In year 9 I started teaching myself piano/keyboard and played guitar in a rock band at school. I also wrote my first piece for full orchestra. I'd started composing music when I was 7 years old. In my mind, I was simply playing composer but I never stopped. During this year I also discovered my love of teaching. I was now at a school where everybody played either guitar, bass guitar, drums or keyboard. But my best friend liked flute and her mum had one she was allowed to use. During lunch times I taught my friend flute and then we spent hours playing duets together. And, I fell in love with the experience of helping someone else discover the wonders of music and how they could use it to express themselves.

During years 10, 11 and 12 I went through a singer-songwriter phase and recorded my first ever bedroom album. All my friends and family got a copy for Christmas.

University was overwhelming, terrifying, exciting and fantastic all at the same time. It was like I had finally found someone in the world that I belonged. I, of course, studied music and dedicated myself to both composition and flute performance. Uni presented many challenges. I loved the content but found socialising with a richer demographic puzzling but eye-opening. I also realised that while I could easily write for a full orchestra writing an academic essay was totally another story. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in 2015.

One of the many things they don't teach you at university is how to get a job, build your career or even earn a living using your degree. Many graduates believe the delusion that they will graduate, get a job and move into the next phase of adult life. It might be like this is you study law, education, medicine or IT but not music.

Today I am the Techie Flutist. I write music, perform and teach. I am deliberately not a classroom teacher. I love using music to help people and am slowly figuring out the ins and outs of creating a career in music. I will forever be learning and discovering. I love teaching, creating, sharing ideas, connecting with people and helping them discover the many joys that music can bring.
