🎛️ Flute Through Guitar Pedals: What Does It Sound Like?

10 Surprising Sounds from the Digitech RP55

Yes, you can run a flute through guitar pedals. And no—it doesn’t sound like a joke. It sounds… kind of amazing.

I used the ultra-budget Digitech RP55 to explore 10 preset sounds and captured the results in a video that flutists, gearheads, and the generally curious have really loved. Some sounds are beautiful. Some are weird. Some are downright chaotic. And all of them will stretch your idea of what a flute can do.

🎥 Watch the video:

1. 🎐 Acoustic 5th (Preset 38)

Ambient Pitch Shift

This one layers a perfect fifth above each note—giving your sound a dreamy, open, slightly medieval vibe. Great for ambient music or cinematic soundscapes.

2. ⏱️ Triplet Chunk (Preset 36)

Delay + Chorus

A rhythmic delay that bounces in triplets, blended with a soft chorus swirl. Perfect for looping and building textured grooves.

3. 🌊 20 Fathoms (Preset 26)

Chorus

Thick and shimmery—like playing your flute underwater (in a good way). Great for slow melodic lines and vibe-heavy improvisation.

4. 🌀 Pedal Steel (Preset 33)

Pitch Shift

Slides your notes in odd, bendy ways. Unstable but interesting. Think pedal steel guitar meets space alien flute.

5. 🔥 Power Flange (Preset 14)

Distortion + Flanger

Big, crunchy, and dramatic. If you’ve ever wanted your flute to sound like a fuzzed-out electric guitar, this is the one.

6. 🌬️ Crunchy Phase (Preset 6)

Envelope/Filter

This one reacts to your dynamics—it filters and shifts depending on how hard you blow. It’s like your flute turns into a synth with mood swings.

7. 🌸 Acoustic Chorus (Preset 10)

My Favourite Sound

Delicate, floaty, and really flattering on flute. This is the one I’d actually perform with—it just makes everything sound a little more magical.

8. 👄 Otto Wah (Preset 19)

Auto Wah

A funky, vowel-shaped filter that opens and closes automatically. It’s kind of cheeky. Almost like the flute is… talking back.

9. 👽 Whammy Time (Preset 17)

Weird + Pitch Modulation

This one is hard to explain. It bends your notes in alien ways—glitchy, bendy, robotic. If you’re into the weird stuff, you’ll love it.

10. 💣 Distortion (Preset 7)

Raw Grit

I saved this for last because it reveals the RP55’s biggest flaw: distortion instability. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it feeds back like mad. But hey, chaos can be creative… if you’re brave enough to ride it.

🧠 Final Thoughts

The RP55 is cheap, outdated, and unpredictable—but that’s kind of the fun. It’s not on my board anymore, but it was an amazing entry point into the world of flute effects.

If you’re experimenting at home and want to explore wild sounds on a budget, this little unit will get you there. Just… maybe avoid using it live unless you’re into sonic roulette.
