WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT?

You have started learning flute, you can make a clear, consistent sound and your fingers are starting to find their way around but now what? Youve seen other fluatists on youtube like Mellisa Keeling or The Techie Flutist and you’d love to be able to do what they do but you have no idea about anything to do with music technology. IT all seems so scary and foreign. And where would you even start?

To be like a Piano (but better)

To experience the breadth and depth of piano on a flute is transformative. There’s a reason why every asian child starts their musical journey with piano lessons. It’s easy to produce a good sound from day one by simply pressing a key, unlike the flute, which is challenging to even make a sound on, or the violin, which can sound like a dying cat in the hands of a beginner. The piano’s range allows you to explore every part of music, from soaring melodies in its upper register to deep bass riffs. Additionally, the piano’s ability to play both melody and harmony provides a comprehensive foundation for all music, unlike the flute, which traditionally plays one note at a time. Beyond musical skills, piano lessons develop coordination, discipline, and communication skills, among others. Now, with the use of pedals, you can transform your flute into an instrument resembling the piano. You can naturally play high, soaring melodies while also incorporating bass and chords, forcing you to think both vertically and horizontally. In fact, it might be even better because working with loops demands good rhythm and helps you naturally improve your intonation.

Play In An Ensemble By Yourself

Playing flute with guitar pedals is like being an entire ensemble by yourself. You can layer every part, including bass, rhythm, harmony, melody, and counter-melody, transforming your performance into a rich, multi-dimensional experience. No longer limited to one note at a time or the traditional sound of a flute, effects allow you to create a variety of strange and wonderful sounds, expanding your musical possibilities.

Makes you a Better Flautist by dramatically improving your rhythm and intonation.

Pedals compel you to address two common issues in your playing: rhythm and intonation. They provide instant feedback, which helps you become a better player faster. By highlighting these aspects, pedals encourage you to improve your timing and pitch accuracy, leading to more precise and confident performances.

Lots of New Music

With flutists like The Techie Flutist, Melissa Keating, Rosalind McAllister, and others leading the way, the fast-growing skill set of combining flute with guitar pedals is revolutionising the field.

Be a Soloist That Isn’t Boring So You Get Gigs

Be a soloist who stands out and actually gets gigs. On average, there are 6,000 flute graduates per year worldwide, all trained to play the same repertoire: Bach, Trevor Wye exercises, Mozart concertos, and classic French pieces by composers like Fauré. This music has been performed millions of times and recorded hundreds of times, often for solo flute or flute and piano, which can become monotonous. However, using guitar pedals with your flute creates limitless possibilities. No two flautists will have the same setup, allowing you to perform in new and innovative ways. This approach not only revitalises traditional repertoire but also opens the door to an entirely new range of music.

Makes Practicing More Fun

With all these amazing sounds at your finger tips, practice is never boring. Your never just playing a piece of music, you play it to ask what can I add to this piece, how can I make it my own? Consequently because your enjoyment of the instrument increases you play your flute more, as you play it more you can play more advanced repertoire, as you play more advanced repertoire you enjoy it more, and the beautiful cycle continues.

hi, I'm emma

the Techie Flutist

I have been a music teacher for 15 years, and love watching my students grow and build on their skills through music creativity. I discovered flute effects 10 years ago while studying at uni, searching for a unique sound for an assignment. I began experimenting with what I had: a flute, a microphone, the built-in effects on my Yamaha mixing desk, and my brother’s guitar pedal. Not only did I receive a high distinction for my work, but I also found a lifelong passion.

Using technology to extend the limitations of the flute I discovered an entire world of possibilities. Suddenly I could play chords and layer in dense harmonies and intricate counter melodies. I felt like I had the breadth and depth of an orchestra right at my finger tips. Having spent the last 10 years fully exploring the technology, I am now so excited to share this treasure trove with students and audiences alike.

WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT?

  • Microphones – just because its called a flute mic doesn’t mean it will work well with pedals
  • Cables
  • Adapters
  • I’ve spent thousands on gear, thinking each item will be the missing piece, you don’t have too, by understanding each effect you can get the right pieces of equipment the first time
  • I have spent days, weeks and months problem solving tech set ups – lean a methodical approach that will identity any problem – so you can spend more time playing
  • Thinking you can learn everything off YouTube – its not comprehensive or methodical there is no guarantee it will work, sometimes if you are missing one small piece in the puzzle your entire set up won’t work
  • Using the wrong type of microphone and picking up too much unwanted background sound, causing feedback
  • Too weak a signal going into from the microphone into the pedals resulting barely audio sound
  • Not knowing how to power your pedals properly leads to needing either a dozen chords more to power everything or damaged equipment when you over power a pedal and fry its circuits. (expensive mistake) I did it once, in the course you will learn the ins and outs of power bricks and how to power every pedal safely.
  • Using a guitar amp to hear your sound – they weren’t designed for microphones, produce a lot of feedback and don’t sound great.
  • There are no other courses out there like this. There are plenty of guitar based courses but nothing especially for flute, an instrument that presents a unique set of challenges guitarist don’t have to content with.
  • If you don’t have a go, nothing will change. You will continue to sound and play like every other flautist
  • Start creating your own unique sound
  • Don’t be stuck playing the same old repertoire
  • Don’t get left behind as more and more instrumentalist cellos and violins venture into using effects
